Edna could hear the faint sound of their heavy boots. She shuddered every time their boots tip-toed on the hard-wood floor. “Where is it?” A gruff voice growled. It was in the middle of the night. Two men approached Edna and Edith’s room.
“We ain’t doing much good here. We could just go to the people’s house across the street. We know where they have hiding places.”
“Quiet, Filbert. You’ll wake ‘um all. Now you know that we’ve been over there and took all their money long ago. Now, you search that place. I’ll get this ‘un.”
Edna squeezed her sister’s shoulder, attempting to wake her, “Edith, wake up.” Edna gulped, the men had heard her.
“Filbert, you, you woke ‘um up. Let’s get out, outa here before…”
“You wanted to come here first, Gareth. You take the punishment. You need ta.”
“Oh, Filbert, you’re right. I should take the consequences.” Gareth said right out loud. “We should go back ta prison.”
“PRISON?!” Filbert screamed, causing all family members to wake up. “You mean give ourselves up? Are you crazy or what?”
Four year old Edith shot up right and started to say, “You get out of my house or I’ll have Pa shoot you dead.”
“Oh, alright, Miss, I’ll leave. You sure got some guts there. I’ll be seeing ya later,” Gareth said. Pa was already at the door with the gun.
“Sir, what are you doing in my house?”
“Oh, nothin’ much. Just tellin’ your daughter that we be a goin back ta prison.” Gareth held out his hand. Pa shook his hand and Gareth said, “Pleased ta meet ya, Sir. My name be Gareth.”
“My name is Harry. This is my wife Fern, and my daughters Edith and Edna.
“Ain’t it a pleasure! I just wanted a few of yer coins!”
“GARETH!” Filbert yelped! “Don’t say no more!”
“Sure!” Gareth replied. “I just want these good folks ta know that I am some criminal!”
